About ISCEE 2016

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is proud to bring to you the International Symposium on Civil and Environmental Engineering 2016 (ISCEE 2016). Jointly organised by the Centers of Research in the Faculty, i.e. Jamilus Research Center for Sustainable Construction (JRC), Micropollutant Research Center (MPRC) and Smart Driving Research Center (SDRC), ISCEE 2016 aims to bring together experts from the academia and industry to share their research and discuss about current trends, new innovations, challenges and solutions in the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

ISCEE 2016 is co-organised by Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Universitas Brawijaya, the Institute for Infrastructure Engineering and Sustainable Management and Jabatan Kerja Raya.

Parallel Conferences

ISCEE 2016 will feature three conferences that will run concurrently:

Call For Papers

The ISCEE 2016 Organising Committee invites authors to submit previously unpublished research papers for presentation within any of the thematic areas outlined in the abovementioned conferences.

Call for papers has closed. Registration is still open for attendees. Register here

Paper Submission Guidelines

  1. An author wishing to present in the symposium will create a document consisting of a complete description of his/her ideas and applicable research results in six (6) to eight (8) pages only, including all text, figures and references.
  2. A maximum of two (2) papers may be submitted by the same first author. If the same first author submits two (2) papers, a supplementary publication fee is due for the additional paper.
  3. Papers should be formatted according to the Guidelines described here. All papers must be written in English and submitted in MS Word (.doc) for both the review process and final manuscript submission.
  4. Paper Template (MS Word)
  5. Papers submitted will be reviewed by experts selected by the symposium committee for their demonstrated knowledge of particular topics. Authors will be notified of the review results by email.
  6. Papers must be submitted by the deadline date. There will be no exceptions.
  7. Accepted papers must be presented at the symposium by one of the authors, or, if none of the authors are able to attend, by a qualified surrogate. The presenter must register for the symposium at one of the rates offered, and must register before the deadline given for author registration. Failure to register before the deadline will result in automatic withdrawal of your paper from the conference proceedings and program.
  8. The paper must be an original contribution. By submitting a manuscript to ISCEE 2016, the author guarantees that it has not been previously published (or accepted for publication) in substantially similar form. Furthermore, no paper that contains significant overlap with the contributions of this paper either has been or will be submitted during the ISCEE 2016 review period to any other journal or conference.
  9. If there are papers that may appear to violate any of these conditions, then it is the authors' responsibility to cite these papers, argue in the body of your paper why your ISCEE 2016 paper is non-trivially different from these concurrent submissions, and include anonymised versions of those papers as supplemental material.

Paper Review Process

  1. Papers submitted will be pre-screened for conformity with submission guidelines and for overall appropriateness. Papers that pass the initial screening process will then be double-blind reviewed.
  2. The double-blind peer review process is employed to ensure that both authors and reviewers remain anonymous during the review process. Expert specialists within the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be selected to perform the reviews.
  3. List of Reviewers
  4. This process will take place prior to both the podium presentation at the symposium and the publication of the proceedings. Authors will receive feedback in the form of a peer review report. The paper peer review process and the outcomes presented in the review reports will be monitored and verified by the Publication Committee.

Paper Publication

  1. Selected papers presented at ISCEE 2016 will be published in a Journal that is indexed by SCOPUS, among others. Please note that these papers will have to pass a rigorous review process organised by the Journal.
  2. All other papers presented at ISCEE 2016 will be published in MATEC Web of Conferences (ISSN: 2261-236X) that is indexed by SCOPUS, Thomson Reuters, Engineering Village, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Inspec, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and Google Scholar. Publication of papers in the proceedings is conditioned on a positive assessment by reviewers.

Presentation Guidelines

Podium presenters are encouraged to follow guidelines below, which have been designed to assist you in preparing an effective presentation for ISCEE 2016.

1. Duration of Presentation

Your presentation slot includes:

  • 10 minutes of oral presentation assisted by PowerPoint slides.
  • 5 minutes of questions and answers hosted by the session Chairperson.

Note: The session Chairperson will be asked to strictly enforce the time limit on your presentation. It is recommended that you time your presentation to be one or two minutes shorter than the allocated time, to allow for the change-over time and introduction. For this, you may prepare roughly 10 slides, excluding the title and acknowledgement slides.

2. Preparation of Slides

Your slides should be prepared using Microsoft PowerPoint. Special attention must be paid to:

  • The font size chosen (i.e. no smaller than 20 point).
  • The choice of colour scheme for the background and text.
  • Avoiding text-heavy slides,
  • Avoiding injudicious use of object builds (animations) and slide transitions.
  • Keeping your presentation as simple as possible to avoid hardware and software conflicts. Audio and video files cause the most problems, so avoid using them.

3. Uploading PowerPoint File

All presentations must run on Windows operating system. Your PowerPoint file must be uploaded to the notebook or desktop computer provided at the session room at least 30 minutes before the start of the session. Name your PowerPoint file with your name. You may use a USB media device such as a memory stick or external drive to upload your file. Presenters are not allowed to use their own laptops, so as to avoid possible technical glitches.

4. Reporting to the Chairperson

You should report to the session Chairperson at least 15 minutes before the start of the session. Introduce yourself and provide him/her with a brief biography of yourself (3 to 4 lines), which will be used for your introduction.

No-Show Policy

Papers that are accepted must be presented at the symposium, either by the authors themselves, or via proxy. In case a paper is not presented at the symposium, it shall be deemed a "no-show". No-shows will be removed from post-symposium distribution and will not be available on open-access publications.

Exceptions to this policy will be made in rare and unusual situations by the Organising Committee only if there is evidence that the no-show occurred because of unanticipated events beyond the control of the authors, and that every option available to the authors to present the paper was exhausted.

Authors of no-show papers wishing to appeal the no-show status of their paper must appeal by email to the Organising Committee no later than 14 days after the start of ISCEE 2016 and must provide evidence to convincingly demonstrate that their absence was as a result of forces beyond their will and control, or that an erroneous decision was made.

Decisions on appeals will be made by the Organising Committee based on the supporting evidence provided. Failure to meet the appeals deadline will automatically result in rejection of the appeal. Possible evidence for exceptions include medical documents, death notices, airline ticket receipts, visa-rejection letters, and other official documents supporting the appeal such as visa-application receipts (proof that the application was submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the symposium start date).

Venue

ISCEE 2016 is proud to have the Historical City of Melaka as its host city.

Melaka (or Malacca) is the third smallest state in Malaysia bordering Johor and Negeri Sembilan. The city is well-known for its rich heritage and culture. Its capital, Melaka City, is dubbed "Bandaraya Bersejarah" (Historical City) and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Melaka lures droves of visitors to its namesake historic port city, where they are quickly steeped in an intoxicating multicultural world of heritage architecture and the alluring aromas of distinctive local cooking. Under the Melaka sultanates, the city was a wealthy centre for trade with China, India, Siam (Thailand) and Indonesia, owing to its strategic position on the Selat Melaka (Malacca Straits). Melaka has a rich seam of heritage and remains one of Malaysia’s most rewarding tourist experiences. Proud of its multicultural heritage, plentiful museums and assorted cultural attractions, Melaka is a tourist habitat par excellence.Lonely Planet

Getting Here

By Car

Use the North-South Expressway (E2) if you are planning to drive to Melaka and exit at the Ayer Keroh interchange (Exit 231). From Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the journey will take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. If you are travelling from Kuala Lumpur, it will take about 2 hours. Driving from Johor Bahru and Singapore will take you about 2 hours 30 minutes and 3 hour 30 minutes respectively. From Penang, the journey to Melaka will last for close to 5 hours 30 minutes. For toll rates and to plan your journey, visit the PLUS website.

By Bus or Taxi

If you are in Kuala Lumpur, catch a bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan. There are several bus companies operating routes to Melaka Sentral, the main transportation terminal in Melaka. The bus trip takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. If you have touched down at KLIA or KLIA2, Transnasional buses operate routes from the airports to Melaka Sentral, costing around RM25 per trip.

A single trip by taxi from KLIA or KLIA2 to Melaka will cost you between RM150 and RM300 depending on type of service or vehicle.

By Plane

Currently, there are only two airlines that fly directly into Melaka. Malindo Air operates flights to the Melaka International Airport from Penang (Malaysia) and Pekanbaru (Indonesia), while Xpress Air operates flights to Melaka from Pekanbaru.

International participants may choose to fly into KLIA and KLIA2 in Sepang before opting to travel by car or bus to Melaka.

International participants who wish to travel only by air, may consider flying into Penang Airport and taking a connecting flight using Malindo Air to Melaka.
